Batumi Botanical Garden

Batumi Botanical Garden - Botanical Garden in Adjara, 9 km far from the city Batumi, on the coastline between the Green Cape and the River Chaqvistskali mouth. The garden is about 1 km southwest of the coastline and it spreads from 0-220 meters above sea level.

Batumi Botanical Garden - One of the largest and richest botanical gardens in the world, it is situated on 111 hectares and was set up in 1912. The garden includes the Colchis Forest Reserve and many different floristic landscapes. There are many species and varieties of plants in the garden. The botanical garden is the best place for nature lovers.

There is no similar botanical garden in the world in the sense that the species of plants derived from completely different climatic and landscape zones coexist in Batumi Botanical Garden. In this magical garden, both the palm of the Canary Finch and the Japanese Sakura are equally flourished.

Dendroflora

The terrain of the Batumi Botanical Garden is mountainous the soil is reddish, brown and alluvial. The garden has three dendro-parks, Colchis forest reserve and nine floristic-geographical sections: humid subtropics of the Caucasus, Australia, New Zealand, the Himalayas, East Asia, North America, South America, Mexico and the Mediterranean.

The plant collection includes more than 5,000 species, varieties, shapes and types. The garden is full of unique plants: Podocarpus Totara, Southern Cordillera, Nepalese evergreen, evergreen oaks, over 80 varieties of Japanese camellia, 20 species of maple palms, 15 species of magnolia.

You will also find a rich collection of azaleas, soap tree, many industrial varieties of bamboo, mammoth tree, evergreen sequoia, fast-growing deciduous oaks, Mexican pine, many species of cactus, South American cassava, etc. The ancient Colchian forest is well preserved here.

History

From the 80s of XIX century, significant introductory works of exotic plants were launched in the part of Batumi. Michael D'Alfonso, Veru, Solovtsev, Olinski, Diadusha, Porai-Koshitse, Stoianov, Triandafilis and others were considered as the persons introducing the plants at the Black Seaside of Tans Caucasus and cultivators of resort gardens. Geographer and traveler Pavel Tatarinov is also considered to be one of the initiators, having founded so-called “Acclimatization Garden” on 10 hectare areas in 1892 on Batumi Coast, is currently known as “Upper Park”.

Foundation of Batumi Botanical Garden is related to the name of Andrei Krasnov, a Professor, Geographer, Botanical and Traveler from Kharkov University. Batumi botanical Garden was opened on November 3, 1912. Georgian agronomist-decorator Iason Gordezian greatly contributed to its cultivation and decoration.

The garden serves as a significant center for spreading agricultural and biological knowledge. It has established a relationship with the Botanical Gardens of more than 140 countries, Universities and other scientific-research institutions in the form of signing the Memoranda of Cooperation. The Botanical Garden is distinguished by its scientific library, herbarium, and seed foundation. The garden publishes various scientific, practical, methodological and cognitive literature and the newspaper “The Botanical Garden.’’

In 2012, a hundred years anniversary of the garden was celebrated with different events, which was ended with an international scientific-practical conference in 2013.
