You will leave Tbilisi early in the morning and head towards Akhaltsikhe - a cozy, small city in Georgia's southwestern region of Samtskhe–Javakheti. On the way to Akhaltsikhe, we will briefly stop to stretch legs at a picturesque, medieval Green Monastery perched in the middle of a thick, deciduous forest (a stroll of 2.5 km total).
Rabati Fortress - a reconstructed medieval castle with a Disney-like feeling to it. In the late afternoon, we will visit Sapara Monastery set in a green forested canyon. Sapara has existed from at least the 9th century and had many important figures in Georgian ecclesiastical history among its monks
From Sapara Monastery, we will head to a small guest house located near Vardzia, a famous cave complex in southern Georgia, excavated from the slopes of the Erusheti Mountain on the left bank of the Kura River. Here we will relax over a delicious dinner before calling it a day.
After breakfast, we will visit Vardzia Cave Complex; we will explore its narrow corridors, hidden passages, and rock-curved living quarters. The complex was an important cultural center, a place of significant literary and artistic work. The Church of the Dormition, dating to the 1180s during the golden age of Tamar and Rustaveli, has an important series of wall paintings.
Once our visit to Vardzia runs to an end, we will start heading back to Tbilisi. On the way, we will pass two vulcanic lakes - Saghamo and Paravani. We will also stop at an Armenian family to enjoy a lovely homemade lunch. Return to Tbilisi. The end of the tour.
