Ambrolauri

Ambrolauri - City and municipality, administrative center of Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti. It is located at river mouth of Rioni and Krikhula, at 550 m above sea level. There are: a wine factory, court, gym, hospital, theater, museum and a residence of Nikortsminda Eparchy.

History

In the sources Ambrolauri is mentioned since XVII century. It was one of the residences of Imereti kings. There was a royal palace here. From this complex the ruins of the church and the tower are preserved. It was represented the administrative center of Ambrolauri since 1930 and was declared a city in 1966. Since 2014, it was isolated from Ambrolauri Municipality as a separate administrative unit.
