Rize Castle

Rize Castle (Turkish: Rize Kalesi) is a partially ruined medieval castle located in Rize, northeastern Turkey.

Rize Castle is located on a hill southwest of the city center and offers panoramic views of the city. The castle consists of a citadel and a lower castle. The citadel is believed to have been built during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (527–565), while the lower castle dates back to the 13th century. It covers an area of 480 m2. Between the cylindrical bastions are bastions of various shapes, such as square, rectangular and round. Today, the castle is hidden among modern buildings. The walls of the southern part of the castle were restored in 1989. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism started a restoration project for Rize Castle in 2011.

Today, a cafe-bar operates on the territory of the fortress. The fortress offers views of the city and the Black Sea.
