About Aspindza
Aspindza is located in Samtskhe-Javakheti region, it is the municipality center and has the status of the small town since the 1961 year. It is situated in the east side of the Akhaltsikhe valley, at the right bank of the river Mtkvari, in 34 km to the south-east from the city of Akhaltsikhe. There is administrative, cultural, educational, healthcare facilities, historical sites dated XI-XII centuries and several processing facilities.
History
The name "Aspinda" comes from the Persian and it means the hotel on the long road or place to have a rest. The small city is dated with the 888 years when it was initially mentioned in historical manuscripts.
At the end of the XVI century, Aspinda was conquered by the Turks. By that time it was a big village. According to the "Gurjistanis Viaietis Didi Davtari" (Document describing census and economic data), there was 50 household with orchards and vineyards and they had 25 00 Akhcha (Turkish silver main coin) as an income. Aspindza is also mention in other historical sources.
In the 1625 years, Giorgi Saakadze has defeated Kizilbashes near Aspinda and in the 1770 year during Battle of Aspindza the king Erekle II has defeated joined forces of ottomans and Dagestan's
According to the treaty of Adrianople in the 1829 years, Aspindza has been included in the territory of the Russian Empire. Based on the census data of Ekvtime Takaishvili Aspinda is the big village. It is the second post station from Akhaltsikhe to Akhalkalaki.
