About Baghdati

Bagdati Municipality is located in Imereti Region. In historical sources Bagdati is first mentioned in the beginning of the 18 century. However the civilization prints are dated back to the IV B.C. According to the historical sources the oldest place in Bagdati is village Dimi. Its said that the first unifying king of Georgia Parnavaz, built here a fortification buildinf ad called it Dimna. There are several opinions about the origin of the name Bagdati. According to first version its an old Persian word, which means gifted by the god and its correct form in Baghdadi. Due to second version it is related to the woman head cover accessory. This word mean beautiful in Turkish language. Bagdati became separate district in 1930. In 1940, on 14 of April, after 10 year of death of Vladimir Mayakovski, in Bagdati was established his house-museum, and Bagdati district was renamed to Mayakovski district. In the 90i-ies it war renamed back to Bagdati. In the municipality are functioning theater, museums, libraries and professional educational colleges. Agriculture is developed here. Main directions are: viticulture, horticulture and livestock. The food industry is also developed, here are wine and cognac factories. Mineral water is found in the region and produced "Sairme". On the territory of the municipality are located two Spa resorts: Sairme and Zekari. Bagdati is famous for its beautiful nature and interesting cultural monuments, which makes it tourist potential higher, along with Spa resorts.


Geography and Climate

Bagdati municipality is located in Imereti region, in river Khanistskali basin. Its administrative center is Bagdati city. From the west municipality is boardered with Vani, south-west - Tskaltubo, from the north and north-east Terjola and Zestafoni, east -Kharagauli and from south Adigeni and Akhaltsikhe municipalities. Bagdati territory mainly is mountainous, and a small part is lowland. The main orographic unit is Meskheti ridge, the northern branches of which are lowing rapidly to Imereti lowland. The municipality includes Imereti lowland as well. The main river in Bagdati municipality is Khanistskali. The important inflows of Khanistskali are: Laishuria, Sakraula, Kershaveti and Tsablarastskali. The rivers feed with rain and underground waters. The municipality has rich flora and fauna. The whole territory of the district is covered with forest. The upper belt of the forest zone is coniferous,which end up with sub alpine forest. Upper the forest zone are sub alpine and alpine meadows. There are widely spread beech, maple, elm, hornbeam and chestnut trees. There are spread some animals, such as: deer, wild pig, lynx, bear, wild cat and others. There are lots of birds: the forest chicken, hawks, hoopoe, quail, wild pigeons and others.

In Bagdati municipality is humid subtropical climate. There is moderately cold winter and long warm summer, Average yearly temperature is 14°C.


What to visit

Bagdati municipality is special with variety of cultural monuments and beautiful nature. One of the popular place is Khani waterfall, located in between the rocks and trees. The interesting place is columns of volcanic origin, locals call them Kvasakdari. Ajameti Managed Reserve where we meet Imeretic Oak relics forests, is also located in municipality. Vartsikhe water reservoir is also beautiful place. The medieval fortresses or churches, located in region, are important part of our culture. Remarkable places are Rodopolic city remains, Tsitelkhevi church, Devadzeebi church, Dimna fortress and others. In Bagdati you can visit museum, where are displayed interesting expositions. As we mentioned above there are two resorts, for people, who love to rest in nature.
