About Khulo
Khulo is located in autonomous republic of Adjara. It is an administrative center of Khulo municipality. Situated in the Adjaristskali gorge, on Akhaltsikhe-Batumi road, 923 meters from sea level, 88 kilometers from Batumi. There are administrative, cultural, educational and health care institutions, small enterprises in the town.
History
The old form of Khulo is "Khula", which means the trading house. In the middle ages there was a caravan- trade road, which connected Samtskhe-Javakheti to the Adjara-Black Sea Coast with Goderdzi Pass. In the period of Ottoman domination, the upper political center of Adjara moved to Khulo from Skhalta. In 1874 its population was not more than 100 households. There was a church in Khulo, whose stones were used for the construction of the Djame and other buildings. In 1964 Khulo received the city status.
