About Kutaisi Opera House
Kutaisi Opera House is located in Imereti region, in the city of Kutaisi, on Rustaveli Avenue. The current building of the theatre was opened in 1969. Theatrical performances have been held in the city since 1861, under the leadership of Kirile Lortkipanidze, Dimitri Bakradze and Akaki Tsereteli. In 1880, Kote Meskhi created a permanent troupe, which was placed in a building specially built for the theatre by Stefane Kharazishvili. The Kharazov Theatre was destroyed because of fire in 1946. The new opera house was built on the same place and the wall on the side of Rustaveli Street is preserved from the old theater. Kutaisi Opera Theatre was officially opened on December 27, 1969 by Zakaria Paliashvili's opera "Absalom and Ether". Lado Meskhishvili, Kote Marjanishvili, Ushangi Chkheidze, Aleksandre Imedashvili, Vaso Abashidze, Veriko Anjaparidze and others performed at the Kutaisi Theatre at different times.
