About Niko Berdzenishvili Museum of Local Lore
Niko Berdzenishvili Museum of Local Lore is located in Chokhatauri Municipality. The museum collects, studies and exhibits the history of the region. It was founded in 1958. During the three years since its establishment, various archeological excavations and expeditions have uncovered numerous archeological, ethnographic, geological, mineralogical, numismatic and manuscript materials characteristic of the region. The first exhibition of the museum opened on August 5, 1961.
In 2003, the Chokhatauri Museum of Local Lore was named after Georgian scientist, historian, archaeologist, academician, public figure Niko Berdzenishvili. The museum has a section on archeology, ethnography, history and modern life history of the municipality.
The museum mainly preserves archeological material: combat and labor tools of V-VII centuries BC, artifacts of the cemetery of the archaic period, beads made of different materials, bracelets, earrings, pottery, numismatic material, XIX century weapons: swords, daggers, rifles. ethnographic material of the XIX century, manuscripts, musical instruments: lyre, panduri, salamuri, music closet (polyphony), personal archives of dukes of Guria, documentary material.
