About Shindisi Heroes Memorial

Best time to visit: All Season

Shindisi Heroes Memorial stands near the railway station in Shindisi, Gori Municipality, in the Shida Kartli region. It commemorates 17 Georgian servicemen who died here on 11 August 2008. Closely connected with Georgia's recent history, the site is a place to remember those killed in the war.

History

On 11 August, during the 2008 Russia–Georgia war, an engineering platoon of the Georgian Armed Forces' Second Infantry Brigade fought Russian forces near Shindisi railway station. Seventeen Georgian servicemen died in the unequal battle. In Georgia, their resistance has become a symbol of courage and loyalty to fellow soldiers.

Local residents also played an important part in the events. Among them was Akhmeta Khutsishvili, who sheltered wounded servicemen and helped them survive. The story of Shindisi remembers both the soldiers and the civilians who came to the aid of others during the war.

The memorial and its significance

The location is central to the memorial's meaning: this place of remembrance is directly connected with the railway setting where the fighting took place. Visiting helps put the history of Shindisi into a physical context and offers time to reflect on the human cost of war.

Each year on 11 August, relatives, fellow servicemen and other visitors gather to honour those who died. Please respect the quiet character of the site, remembrance ceremonies and other visitors.

How to get there

You can travel from Gori to Shindisi by car or taxi. Set your destination to the Shindisi Heroes Memorial near the railway station, on the western side of the village. Allow around half an hour for a quiet visit.

The trip can also include the Iakob Gogebashvili House-Museum in Variani. On returning to Gori, you can continue exploring the area's history at Gori Fortress.
