About Skhieri Monastery

Best time to visit: All Season

The Skhieri Monastery is located in the village of Skhieri, Oni Municipality, Racha. According to scientists, monastic life began here in the 9th century. Only the ruins of St. George's church have been preserved from the monastery. The church is a hall-type building. It was built of rock and shirim (facade tile). Only small ruins of the temple have survived to this day. Especially noteworthy are the fragments of ornamented stones collected to the west of the church and the iconostasis columns carved from limestone. In the last century, the slab of the iconostasis, one column and the capital of column were moved to the Oni Museum of Local Lore. On two of the columns of the iconostasis located next to the church, there are images of evangelists, and on the third one, the saints are depicted.
