About St. George's Church in Khatissopeli

Khatisopli St. George's Church is located in Kvemo Kartli, Bolnisi Municipality, in the village of Khatissopeli.

The church is a hall-shaped building, built of stones of various sizes on a foundation. The arrangement is chaotic. During the renovation, a door was cut into the western wall and a bell tower was built on top of the eastern part of the dome. The church has two entrances: the southern door is arched, the western door has a hipped roof. The southern door is framed with tuff stone. The lintels of the western door are made of brick. There is one small window cut into the eastern, western and northern walls. The walls of the church are finished with a batikella cornice. The cornice of the bell tower is decorated with a plant ornament typical of the 17th century. The church and the bell tower are covered with a louvre. The bell tower is a six-arched pediment, which is covered with a pyramidal dome with the same number of facets. The bell tower is plastered. The so-called Russian brick is laid on top of the bell tower's pediment. In the western facade of the church, below the window, a green tuff stone depicting an early medieval Bolnur medallion is inserted. To the east is a semicircular apse, which is separated by a shoulder. The conch and the vault of the hall rest on carved stone arches carried on pilasters and shoulder capitals. There is a niche on both sides of the altar. The northern niche starts a few cantimeters from the floor of the altar and is arched. An additional trapezium has now been inserted into this niche. The southern niche is shorter, starts from the top, and is rectangular. The trapezium is new and is set against the church wall. The floor of the hall is paved with bricks. The church is surrounded by a low stone wall of the later period.
