St. George's Church of Kvemo Karabulagh

The St. George Church of Kvemo Karabulagi is located in Kvemo Kartli, in the village of Kvemo Karabulagi, Dmanisi Municipality. According to locals, the church is a refuge for the childless.

The church of St. George, in whose name it was originally built, stands on a hill on the edge of the village. The church is a hall building and, according to the construction inscription, was built in 1040. The rectangular (5x2 m) hall building is partially glazed on the outside, and is built of roughly worked stone on the inside. The horizontality of the structure is almost preserved. The architrave on the outside and the dome on the inside are in the south wall. In the middle of the architrave stone, a late variation of the Bolnur medallion is carved, on both sides of which an Asomtavruli inscription is carved: “In the name of God, this church was built by the elder George at the time when John had the son of Nicholas, in praise of their soul for the longevity of their son Nicholas, the chorion icon was 260”. The apse is semicircular, the window is rectangular. On its southern and northern sides, small rectangular niches are carved at different heights. The conch rested on a triumphal arch made of smooth stone, which was carried over the shoulder. The hall is not divided, therefore, the vault was carried over the walls. The church was plastered and painted from the inside. Unidentified fragments of painting have survived on the northern wall. In 1944, L. Rcheulishvili saw a stone cross base with the image of a cross in the church, which is why the scientist believed that the church was built as a nest for a stone cross. The remains of a stone fence around the church have survived.
