Armaztsikhe (Bagineti)

Armaztsikhe (Bagineti) is the inner fortress of old Mtskheta. Historical sources attribute the construction of Armaztsikhe to Kartlos - the relative of the Georgians, according to the same sources, its original name is Kartli. The name is associated with Armaztsikhe Parnavaz and the idol erected by him, Armaz, who was the supreme deity of the state. Bagineti is a late common name and is probably derived from the Persian word baga (deity).

As a result of archaeological excavations in Armaztsikhe, three construction periods were allocated. The oldest of them dates back to BC. IV-III centuries and was connected with the construction activities of Parnavaz. The second construction period was divided into BC. III-I centuries. The third construction period is A.D. Defined by the I-VIII centuries.

B.C. In 65 CE, during the reign of King Artaxerxes of Iberia, Armageddon was overthrown by Pompey, the Roman commander. However, the city was soon rebuilt. It was finally destroyed in the 8th century as a result of Murvan Kru's expedition.

Archaeological research in Baginet and his interest by scientists began in the late 19th century. Greek craftsman has shown a piece of brick founded on Armaztsikhe to Ilia Chavchavadze. Ilia was very interested in this fragment and asked Dimitri Bakradze to carry out archaeological works. Dimitri Bakradze gave the works to Ekvtime Takaishvili. As a result of Ekvtime Takaishvili's two-week expedition, a fragment of the painting with the image of the goddess was revealed. This fragment and other artefacts found on the monument are kept in the National Museum.

Location

Armaztsikhe is located on the right bank of the Mtkvari, on the outskirts of the Mtskheta-Tbilisi highway, on Bagineti Mountain. Before entering Mtskheta, you will notice sign. It is near this sign that you will find a short path to climb. And if you drive to Karsan turn, you have to cross the dirt road and you will be able to reach the museum gate.
