Shindisi Fortress stands on level ground in the northern part of Shindisi village, in Gori Municipality, Shida Kartli. Probably dating to the second half of the 18th century, its river-stone walls and round corner towers form part of the village's historic landscape. A visit offers a closer look at the defensive architecture of this period.
The fortress measures 67.5 × 49.6 metres. River stone is the main building material, with brick also used in parts of the interior walls and vaulting. The enclosure is rectangular, with a broad arched entrance on its western side.
Cylindrical towers occupy all four corners: northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest. Both the fortress and its enclosing wall are damaged, but the surviving structures still help visitors understand its layout and defensive features.
The enclosing wall has two tiers. The lower tier is solid, without openings, while a wooden fighting walkway once ran along the upper tier. Paired firing slits line the upper part of the wall, which is crowned with semicircular merlons. These details show how the height and upper level of the enclosure were used for defence.
The towers originally had three storeys. Those at the southeast and northwest corners are better preserved. The southwest tower survives to two storeys, while the northeast tower is almost entirely ruined. Their differing states of preservation help visitors piece together an impression of the original fortress.
You can reach Shindisi from Gori by car or taxi. Select the fortress as your destination within the village and use the map on this page to locate it. As the structure is damaged, avoid climbing the walls and towers.
Combine your visit with the Shindisi Heroes Memorial beside the railway station, dedicated to the 17 Georgian servicemen killed on 11 August 2008. The Iakob Gogebashvili House-Museum is in the nearby village of Variani. On returning to Gori, you can also visit Gori Fortress. Together, these places introduce different aspects of the region's defensive architecture, educational heritage and recent history.
